Materials

To create the Four-Patch Surprise Quilt, gather the following materials:

  • 1-1/8 yards of blue print fabric for blocks and pieced inner border
  • 1-1/8 yards of light blue print fabric for blocks and pieced inner border
  • 1-1/2 yards of rust print fabric for blocks and pieced inner border
  • 3 yards of beige print fabric for blocks, borders, and binding
  • 4 yards of backing fabric
  • 73″ x 80″ of quilt batting

The finished quilt top measures 61-1/4″ x 72-5/8″, with each block finishing at 11-3/8″ square. Remember, all measurements include a 1/4″ seam allowance, and you’ll be sewing with right sides together unless otherwise noted.

Preparing for the Surprise: Setting Up for the Four-Patch Quilt

Before you begin cutting, take a moment to prepare your fabrics and workspace. Precision is key in this project, so ensure your rotary cutter is sharp, and your rulers are accurate. Labeling each fabric piece as you cut will help keep everything organized, allowing you to focus on the creative aspects of piecing and assembly.

Consider the colors you’ve chosen and how they’ll interact within the quilt. The contrast between the blue and light blue prints, combined with the warmth of the rust and beige fabrics, will create a striking visual effect. Take the time to arrange your fabrics thoughtfully—this will enhance the overall harmony and surprise elements of the quilt.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Let’s dive into the process of creating your Four-Patch Surprise Quilt. This step-by-step guide will help you piece together each block and assemble the quilt top with confidence.

  1. Cutting Fabrics:
    • From the blue print: Cut 6 strips measuring 2-1/2″ x 42″. Also, cut 39 squares at 4-1/8″, and then cut each square diagonally twice to yield 156 triangles.
    • From the light blue print: Repeat the same cuts as for the blue print—6 strips of 2-1/2″ x 42″ and 39 squares cut into 156 triangles.
    • From the rust print: Cut 120 pieces following Pattern A.
    • From the beige print: Cut 8 strips of 3″ x 42″ for the outer border, 8 strips of 2-1/2″ x 42″ for binding, 2 squares of 6-5/8″, each cut in half diagonally to create 4 corner triangles, 40 squares of 4-1/2″, and 18 pieces each of Patterns B and B reversed.
  2. Assembling the Four-Patch Blocks:
    • Align a blue print strip with a light blue print strip, right sides together. Sew along the long edge to create a strip set. Press the seam allowances toward the blue print.
    • Cut each strip set into 2-1/2″-wide segments to create 80 segments.
    • Sew two segments together to form a Four-Patch unit, pressing the seam allowances in one direction. Each unit should measure 4-1/2″ square. Repeat to make 40 Four-Patch units.
  3. Creating the Blocks:
    • Pair two Four-Patch units with two beige print squares (4-1/2″) and sew them together in pairs. Press seams toward the beige print.
    • Join these pairs to create a Four-Patch block. Press the seams in one direction. Each block should measure 8-1/2″ square. Repeat to make 20 Four-Patch blocks.
  4. Making the Triangle Units:
    • Pair a blue print triangle with a light blue print triangle and sew along the long edge. Press the seam toward the blue triangle. Repeat to make 156 triangle units. Set aside 36 units for the inner border.
  5. Assembling the Block Corners:
    • Add a rust print A piece to the bottom of each triangle unit to form a block corner piece. Press the seams toward the rust print. Make a total of 120 block corner pieces—80 for the blocks and 40 for the inner border.
  6. Constructing the Blocks:
    • Sew block corner pieces to opposite edges of a Four-Patch block. Press seams toward the block corner pieces. Attach the remaining corner pieces to the other edges of the Four-Patch block. Each finished block should measure 11-7/8″ square. Repeat to create 20 blocks.

Additional Tips

  • Fabric Handling: Always handle your triangles with care to avoid stretching the bias edges. This will help maintain the accuracy of your piecing.
  • Pressing Matters: Proper pressing can make a significant difference in the final appearance of your quilt. Press seams consistently and carefully to ensure your blocks lie flat and align perfectly.
  • Chain Piecing: Consider using chain piecing for repetitive steps like creating the Four-Patch units. This technique speeds up the process and keeps everything organized.

Completing the Four-Patch Surprise Quilt is not just about reaching the finish line; it’s about enjoying the journey of discovery and creativity. With each block you sew, you’ll see how traditional elements can combine to create something entirely new and unexpected. The result is a quilt that tells a story—one of tradition, innovation, and the joy of quilting. Display your finished quilt proudly, knowing that you’ve created something truly unique that carries a piece of your quilting journey within it.
