Step-by-Step Guide for Assembling the Brave Tin Soldier Quilt
Step 1: Cutting and Preparing Pieces
- Prepare Templates: Trace and cut out templates for the appliqué cheeks, small heart, and other shapes using thick card.
- Cutting Fabric for Blocks: Use Figs C and D as references to cut each piece for the Ballerina and Soldier blocks. It’s recommended to cut fabric as you go for each block to stay organized.
Step 2: Making the Ballerina Block
Each Ballerina block is assembled in four parts: the castle, head/chest/arms, skirt, and gifts/leg.
- Castle Section:
- Sew two small triangles on the upper corners of the main castle rectangle to form the roof.
- Assemble the castle columns by sewing rectangle and square sections together, as shown in Fig H.
- Head and Chest:
- Create the head by adding corner triangles for the hair, face, and arms.
- Use a tall triangle technique for shaping the chest section, following the detailed steps in Fig K.
- Skirt:
- Construct the skirt with half-square triangles and flying geese units. Arrange these units to create a zigzag pattern for a whimsical look.
- Gifts and Leg:
- Use half-square triangle units for the gift “bows.” Assemble the leg by adding a triangle piece at the bottom.
- Block Assembly:
- Assemble each section following Fig P and add a strip of Fabric 1 to the top and left side of the block. Press to 19½ inches square. Repeat to make six Ballerina blocks.
Step 3: Making the Soldier Block
The Soldier block includes a series of motifs like the heart, bird, and flag that evoke the classic story.
- Heart and Bird:
- Form the small heart using the corner triangle technique. Piece together the bird section, adding a small triangle for the beak and carefully assembling each part following Fig R.
- Large Heart, Flags, and Sail:
- Use half-rectangle triangle units to create flags, with Fig S providing guidance. The sail is constructed similarly to the ballerina’s chest, angled for a precise triangle shape (Fig T).
- Soldier:
- Start with the helmet, applying the tall triangle technique (Fig U). Attach appliqué straps to the jacket in an “X” pattern for detail, and finish assembling the soldier, including arms and legs.
- Block Assembly:
- Combine all sections as shown in Fig Y. Attach strips of Fabric 1 to the top and left side, pressing to 19½ inches square. Repeat to make six Soldier blocks.
Step 4: Adding Appliqué Details
- Cheeks: Create 1-inch (2.5 cm) diameter appliqué circles from Fabric 3 for the cheeks using the gathering method.
- Eyes: Sew French knots with black embroidery floss for eyes on each Soldier and Ballerina face.
Step 5: Assembling the Quilt Top
- Quilt Layout: Lay out the twelve blocks, alternating the Ballerina and Soldier blocks in a 3 x 4 grid.
- Sashing: Sew a sashing strip along the right side of each row. Add a long horizontal sashing strip to the bottom of the quilt.
Step 6: Quilting and Binding
- Make a Quilt Sandwich: Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing, basting them together.
- Quilting: Quilt as desired, following the contours of the blocks to enhance the motifs.
- Binding: Attach the binding by sewing it to the front of the quilt, mitering each corner. Fold the binding to the back and slipstitch for a clean finish.
Additional Tips for a Perfect Finish
- Precision in Cutting: Accurate cutting is key to making each motif stand out and ensuring the overall layout aligns perfectly.
- Matching Seams: Press seams carefully and match them as you sew to create clean lines in each block.
- Binding: Take care with the binding to create neatly mitered corners, adding to the polished look of the quilt.
